I determined the best price in my area for mushrooms is at Smart Food Service. I shop at the store in Concord, CA. They have stores through out the Western States. Even if you don’t have this store near you, there may be a similar Warehouse type store in your area. By comparing prices at the stores in your area, you can pay the best price for the groceries you want to buy!
Here’s the deal at my store:
Whole Mushrooms white button, in a box $16.87/10 lbs.
=$1.69/lb.!
vs. Compared to buying them at my local grocery chain=$6.89/lb.! (in bulk)
If 10 lbs. is more than you think you can use, you can blanch some of them and store in the freezer. Not the same as fresh mushrooms, but we prefer the concentrated flavor of frozen mushrooms in food like soup.
There are smaller boxes at Smart Food Service, but not at the lowest price. You could split them with a friend if 10 lbs. is more than you want to buy. 🙂 My Mom actually started a “Food Buying Co-op” with her friends when I was growing up. It was a great way to buy for bulk prices but the convenience of smaller servings. Some of the Co-Op ladies even came to my wedding. 🙂
The 5 lb. box is still a much better deal than my local grocery chain: $11.20=$2.25/lb. They are on Sale this week for $10.95=$2.19/lb.
